The 10 Communities of Flagstaff
Galahad is a small hamlet in East Central Alberta. Located a few miles north of the Battle River Valley. The major economic base of Galahad is agriculture (wheat, barley, peas, and canola as well as raising beef). The village became a hamlet in the county of Flagstaff in January 2017. This has benefited the community by lowering taxes and upgrading the water and sewer lines. The community has its own cable society for high-speed internet. There is a large extended care facility that employs nurses, nurses aides, housekeeping, dietary and other staff. Services are limited in the community to a co-op card lock gas station, ATB agency, post office, bowling alley, community center, and campground. All other activities and shopping are available in the nearby communities of Forestburg, Killam, Alliance, and Castor. This community is close to major transportation routes Highway 36 & 53.
Alliance is a quaint village in East Central Alberta, centrally located between Castor & Forestburg, just off Highway 36. It has a ski hill less than 10 minutes from the Village, off Highway 36. This small but mighty community is home to many businesses like grocery, liquor, hair salons, banks, garage, bottle depot, motel, restaurant, sign shop and so much more. Larger homes are available for a bit less than in some of the larger communities. There is a market every 3rd Wednesday of the month.
Forestburg is one of the larger villages in Flagstaff County, located at the junction of Highway 53 & Highway 856. Big Knife Provincial Park is 20km south and offers varied recreational opportunities. Forestburg has everything you need for your day-to-day. Preschool to Grade 12 schools, doctors, dentist, registry office, 6 restaurants, 2 banks, hardware store, grocery and so much more. There is also a 9 hole golf course and an outdoor swimming pool. The homes are affordable, and this is a new subdivision if you prefer to build.
Heisler is a village within the County located on Sec. Highway 855 between Highway 53 & 13. This small friendly community offers a good mix of businesses that provide products and services to the community. Heisler is a good plan for families, retirees & entrepreneurs.
Lougheed is a village in Flagstaff County located along Highway 13 between Sedgewick and Hardisty. It is known for having the largest population of ‘Mexican Mennonites’ in the Flagstaff Region as well as getting into the Guinness Book Of World Records for most varieties of Schnitzel commercially available. Lougheed has a good mix of businesses and services available to local residents.
Strome is a hamlet of Flagstaff County located just off Highway 12 between Killam and Daysland. This hamlet is very affordable with lower taxes and house prices for a short drive. Strome has amenities such as gas, bar, seniors center, hair salon, and camping. The community center is used regularly because of its central location and affordability.
Killam is one of four towns in Flagstaff County and boasts the largest population. Located on Highway 13 & 36, Killam is a thriving community with a variety of industrial services: K-9 school, grocery, pharmacy, farm, and car dealerships, plus so much more. The town of Hardisty is home to many employers and large companies such as Gibsons, Enbridge, Flint, CNRL, Husky and so many more. The town has opportunities for new businesses in child care, extended healthcare, and senior services. It is one of the more popular places for investment property for short term employees.
The town of Sedgewick is located along Highway 13. Close proximity to Hardisty and having a larger population often makes it the choice for families. K-12 school, large recreation center, golf, and grocery are a few of the amenities the community offers. New 35 lot subdivision gives purchasers lots of choices.
The town of Daysland is the closest community to Camrose along Highway 13, making it a popular choice for families. Housing tends to be around $50,000 – $100,000 below the Camrose market making the short half-hour drive down the road very appealing. Daysland has a K-12 school, grocery, gas, doctor’s office and many more services such as accountants, flower shop, bottle depot, and liquor store.
